06/09/2011 – CHA Participates in HUDs National Fathers Day 2011 Campaign

Posted on 13. Jun, 2011 by admin in News Archive

June 9, 2011 – The Chattanooga Housing Authority is among nearly 200 housing agencies across the country participating in Father’s Day 2011.  The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is promoting this campaign by encouraging  housing authorities to set aside a special day to celebrate fatherhood and family, as well as to support fathers staying connected with their children.

CHA officials chose to sponsor a Father’s Day essay competition for children living in public housing.  Fifteen families submitted entries, and the fathers of these households will be recognized at a dinner on Friday, June 17, at 7 p.m.  This event will take place at CHA’s central office located at 801 N. Holtzclaw Ave. The guest speaker will be Pastor Willie Paul of New Horizon Baptist Church.

The theme for the evening is “The Life of a Dad.”  An independent panel of judges made up of Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8) participants will select the top two essays, which will be announced at the dinner.  The dinner is being catered by C & W Café, a locally owned and operated establishment.

“There seems to be this myth that public housing only serves women and children,” said Carol Johnson, CHA’s director of resident services. “But we wanted everyone to know that we have some first-class fathers living in our communities who are doing the very best they can to provide for their families.”

The 15 dads being honored are: Donnell Bramlett, Pius Mutubwa and Aroni Ndayisaba, College Hills Courts; Ellis Jones, Timothy Jones and Ralph Smith, Cromwell Hills Apartments; Marvin Harris, Kevin Palmer and Warren Ransom, Emma Wheeler Homes; Anthony Hambrick, Thomas Simmons and Edward Rowe Sr. – Greenwood Terrace Apartments and Scattered Sites; and Marcus Hayes, Christopher Hudgins and Fred Sturdivant, Harriet Tubman Development.

According to U.S. Census data, 24 million American children live in a home without a father.  The Germantown, Md.-based National Fatherhood Initiative also reports that children in homes absent a father are five times more likely to be poor; and are more likely to drop out of school or be incarcerated.

“We know that where you live doesn’t have to define who you are,” Mrs. Johnson said.  “We wanted to shine the spotlight on those men living in public housing who are committed to being there for their children – no matter what their economic circumstances may be.  This event is our way of saying that we appreciate who they are and the positive impact they’re making.”

Also as part of CHA’s celebration of dads, Greenwood and Wheeler are hosting on-site activities for fathers and their families:

  • Wheeler, located at 4900 Edinburg Dr., will have a Father’s Day Brunch on June 17, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the rental office.  Members of the Emma Wheeler Resident Association will prepare and serve the meal.
  • Greenwood, located at 3056 Dee Dr., will have a Block Party on June 18 from noon to 3 p.m. Partners for this event include Abba’s House, RA Ministries, the Greenwood Resident Association and CHA’s Neighborhood Networks Program.  T-Ran Gilbert, a local gospel pop artist, will also perform.

Partners for CHA’s Father’s Day celebration are: Tubman resident Christopher Hudgins, photographer for Father’s Day portraits; Applebee’s (Northgate), Avon, Chattem, Chili’s (Northgate), Dillard’s at Hamilton Place Mall and Plaque Shack.

04/28/11 – CHA’s Neighborhood Networks Initiative Hosts Titans Player’s Mom, Female Litigation Attorney at Pre-Mother’s Day Event

Posted on 02. May, 2011 by admin in News Archive

Chattanooga Housing Authority’s Neighborhood Networks Initiative Hosts

Titans Player’s Mom, Female Litigation Attorney at Pre-Mother’s Day Event

April 28, 2011 – Amanda Ray, an attorney with Chambliss, Bahner & Stophel, and Danita Hill, mother of Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Tony Brown, will be speakers at a pre-Mother’s Day event on Thursday, May 5, at 11 a.m. at Greenwood Terrace Apartments. Located at 3056 Dee Dr., Greenwood is one of the Chattanooga Housing Authority’s 17 public housing communities. The event is being hosted by CHA’s Neighborhood Networks initiative.

Both Attorney Ray and Ms. Hill will share how they overcame various obstacles to lead the successful lives they enjoy today.

Ms. Hill, who gave birth to her now pro-athlete son at age 17, reared him as a single parent. A former public housing resident herself, she resided in Emma Wheeler Homes in the Alton Park area and Greenwood Terrace. She graduated from Brainerd High and earned an associate’s degree in social work from Chattanooga State. Later in life Ms. Hill was diagnosed with diabetes, but managed the disease through nutrition and exercise. Today, she is insulin-free. According to national health statistics, African-Americans are twice as likely to be diagnosed with diabetes as non-Hispanic whites.

Attorney Ray also became a mother at an early age. But despite being a teen mom plagued by other challenges, she graduated as valedictorian of her high school class. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from UTC, and then graduated law school from the University of Memphis. Now at age 25, she works as a litigation attorney for one of the largest law firms in the city.

“These women will share their powerful stories of hope and resilience to inspire our mothers at Greenwood Terrace,” said Janet Radden, project coordinator for CHA’s Neighborhood Networks initiative.

“The issues of poverty, single parenting, abuse and diseases that are prevalent among African Americans are all issues that touch most of our families,” she said. “But Attorney Ray and Ms. Hill are living proof that you can rise above your circumstances – no matter how daunting they may appear.”

In 2008, CHA received a $400,000 Neighborhood Networks grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to create a technology center at Greenwood. Today, the Neighborhood Networks initiative is connecting residents and their families with free programs and services to help them improve their quality of life. Most of the services are related to education, health, total wellness and opportunities for upward mobility.

For more information about the pre-Mother’s Day event or Neighborhood Networks, contact Ms. Radden at 752-4170 or 495-0875.
